DAY 3 - SAN JOSE TECH MUSEUM

The Tech Museum of Innovation

In the morning, we visited The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose. It was a Silicon Valley's landmark that enabled visitors to have a glimpse of the innovation in the world. I saw many interesting innovations here. Guan and I enjoyed playing with the music cubes that could produce different combinations of sounds by changing the surfaces in contact with the screen. After that, we watched a show at the IMAX dome screen theatre.

Young Outliers Design Thinking Workshops

"The Young Outliers Design Thinking Workshops start today. We will spend the next four days in MDEC Americas and meet interesting entrepreneurs, engineers, venture capitalists, and angle investors. We will also learn entrepreneurship and business pitch during the workshops. In the last day, we will pitch our projects on a "Dolphin Tank" (youth version of the Shark Tank).

Sharing Session from Sean Hsu

Sean Hsu, the Senior Engineer and Manufacturing Design Lead from TESLA, shared the process of design thinking - "Find the Need -- Idea -- Concept -- Engineering". He also shared with us his stories of starting his first business at the age of 17 when he built a device that could clean ponds automatically. It was an inspiring session.

MUG Deisgn Challenge

After that, we were separated into groups to design a mug in 20 minutes. One person pretended to be a customer, offering opinions to other team members to design the best mug. As the designer, I drew a few models and picked the one that suited most of the customer's needs. Then, I created a mug prototype from clay. In my design, I eliminated the handler and instead printed the user's palm onto the mug to offer firm holding. Furthermore, I proposed to include a heater to regulate the water temperature in the mug.

Sharing Session from Alberto Villrreal

Alberto Villarreal, the Creative Lead from Google who had designed the Google Pixel phones, shared his inspiration when designing the phones. He also explained the importance of user experience when designing a new product so that it could address the users' problems.
